When Food Security Becomes a Wellness Issue

Published by HealthSource Solutions on

The current conversation around the lapse in SNAP benefits has brought an uncomfortable truth far closer to home. Food insecurity is far more common than most of us realize or want to admit.

It’s easy to think of SNAP as something that happens somewhere else, to someone else. The truth is, most of us are only one or two degrees removed from someone who relies on those benefits to keep their family fed. A neighbor. A co-worker. A friend’s child. And when we talk about health and wellness at work, we can’t ignore that reality.

Healthy eating is expensive. Access to nutritious food is not equal. And in many of the communities we serve, particularly those that have grown up around mills, plants, or public works facilities, food deserts are real. Grocery options are limited, costs are high, and transportation can be a barrier.

At HealthSource Solutions, we see this every day in the populations we serve. In manufacturing, construction, and public sector organizations, wellness gets harder when food insecurity is an issue. You can’t talk about healthy choices when people are struggling to afford the basics.

But this moment, this unfortunate moment… we are offered an opportunity. The public dialogue around SNAP and food access opens the door to real conversations about how we define “wellness” and what it means for American workers and their families.

Employers can play a productive part by:

  • Offering onsite or mobile healthy food options.
  • Partnering with food banks or non-profits.
  • Creating educational programs that respect real-world budgets.
  • Building a culture that acknowledges, not stigmatizes, food insecurity.

Wellness cannot be a luxury. How we engage with our workforce reflects how we care for people when life gets hard. In this conversation, every one of us has some role to play.
