5 Ways to Enhance Your Community Wellbeing During Shelter in Place
During the COVID-19 crisis, we can do a lot more for our community than we may realize, all while following guidelines to keep us apart. For many of us, sheltering at home and staying healthy to help slow the spread of the coronavirus may be the most important way we can help others right now. But as the realities of long-term lockdown and long winter months settle in, we need to look for ways to help our community and to safely leave our homes to enhance our own wellbeing by doing good for others.
Do a good deed for a neighbor. Many people are secluded right now or simply feeling grief. Brighten someone’s day by dropping off a meal or care package, doing their yard work or running an errand like picking up groceries or toilet paper (if you can find any!)
Give Blood. The Red Cross is encouraging healthy donors to keep their current appointments and to book an appointment for the weeks ahead.
Donate to a food shelf. Food shelves are having to change how they operate, but are seeking support and volunteers. Contact your local food shelf for how you can help.
Support a local business. Order takeout or delivery from restaurants open in your area. If you have the means, buy a gift card to a business not able to be open right now, like a local gym, yoga studio, clothing store or hair salon.
Organize a neighborhood activity. Have a vehicle parade for someone’s birthday or special event where you decorate your vehicles, make signs or dress up! Write sidewalk chalk messages on your driveway or leave messages for your neighbors on their sidewalk.
